The Christmas markets, from mid-November until Christmas time, are the main attraction on the streets of Vienna. In particular, the Christmas markets, or Christkindlmärkte as they are known in Austria, are packed with people admiring the festive decorations.

In the several markets spread around the Austrian capital, mulled wine (Glühwein), punch, roasted walnuts, and other delectable foods and beverages will be served.
Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz
The most popular Christkindlmarkt in front of the Town Hall is also known as the Vienna Christmas Dream. With the delightful Christmas illumination and the Ice Dream in the Rathauspark, this place is an obligatory program for many visitors of Vienna during the Advent season.

Christmas Village at the Maria Theresien Platz
In the imperial ambiance between the Museum of Art History and the Natural History Museum, the Christmas village attracts with its 72 stands. Rustic handicrafts, handmade Christmas decorations small souvenirs, or punch in all variations can be found here. The atmospheric Advent lighting transforms the imperial backdrop directly on Vienna’s Ringstrasse into a fairytale Christmas world. In the center of the market, you can see the huge Maria Theresa Monument.

Wintergarden at Museumsquartier
With artistic impulses and cultural experiences, the MuseumsQuartier invites you to atmospheric, pre-Christmas moments from November 10th to December 23rd. This is the place to enjoy the advent season in a hip way. Among other things, hot punch is served and cool music is playing in the artistically and festively decorated courtyard. In line with this, from around 16:00 o’clock onwards the partially covered inner courtyard will be transformed into a Christmas winter sky with elaborate light projections. The restaurants located at MQ, spoil their guests with punch, mulled wine and winter snacks.

Christmas Market at Stephansplatz
The Christmas Market at Stephansplatz enchants thousands of guests from home and abroad every year with the Christmas atmosphere. At the overwhelming backdrop at the foot of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s landmark you are able to warm up with a hot drink.

Advent Market by the Karlskirche

This advent market is located directly in front of the huge Karlskirche and offers rather plain simplicity than colorful Christmas illumination. Usually, there are also some attractions for kids like a draisine train ride and show workshops.

Old Viennese Christmas Market at the Freyung

The best description for this market is quite sure “small but excellent”. At the charming well-kept stands, you get besides artworks several gastronomic specialties offered.

Weihnachtsmarkt Am Hof
The Christmas Market Am Hof is sponsored by a local radio station. Here you can find a broad offer at a large number of stands which are all spread across the place Am Hof. This square has been used as a marketplace since the late 13th century.

The market spreads mainly over 3 narrow alleys: Schrankgasse, Spittelberggasse, and Gutenberggasse. These romantic alleys are perfectly suitable for walking during the advent season.

Christmas Market Schönbrunn Palace
Through the main gate at the Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, you can enter the spacious square in front of the Schönbrunn Palace. Even if there is a huge rush, normally you should be able to drink your hot punch and adore the historical scenery without getting claustrophobia.

Winter Market in the Prater at Riesenradplatz
This market gives you every day the chance to drink your Punch with a view of the romantic illuminated Giant Ferris Wheel. Every night, from Wednesday to Sunday you get additionally into motion with some free live music performances on a big stage at the Riesenradplatz square, directly in the amusement park.

Belvedere Palace Christmas Village

The similarly designed sales huts are placed directly in front of the imposing building of the upper Belvedere Palace. They offer many nice small Christmas presents and of course also the usual hot drinks and delicacies for the cold season. On weekdays and with a bit of luck even without a big rush.
